چکیده

We study the limit of high activation energy of a special Fokker–Planck equation known as the Kramers–Smoluchowski equation (KS). This equation governs the time evolution of the probability density of a particle performing a Brownian motion under the influence of a chemical potential H/ε. We choose H having two wells corresponding to two chemical states A and B. We prove that after a suitable rescaling the solution to the KS converges, in the limit of high activation energy (ε → 0), to the solution of a simpler system modeling the spatial diffusion of A and B combined with the reaction A B. With this result we give a rigorous proof of Kramers’s formal derivation, and we show how chemical reactions and diffusion processes can be embedded in a common framework. This allows one to derive a chemical reaction as a singular limit of a diffusion process, thus establishing a connection between two worlds often regarded as separate. The proof rests on two main ingredients. One is the formulation of the two disparate equations as evolution equations for measures. The second is a variational formulation of both equations that allows us to use the tools of variational calculus and, specifically, Γ-convergence.

Site reactivity in the free radicals induced damage to leucine residues: a theoretical study.

Several recent computational studies have tried to explain the observed selectivity in radical damage to proteins. In this work we use Density Functional Theory and Transition State Theory including tunnelling corrections, reaction path degeneracy, the effect of diffusion, and the role of free radicals to get further insights into this important topic. The reaction between a leucine derivative ...

Influence of diffusion on the kinetics of excited-state association--dissociation reactions: comparison of theory and simulation.

Several recent theories of the kinetics of diffusion influenced excited-state association--dissociation reactions are tested against accurate Brownian dynamics simulation results for a wide range of parameters. The theories include the relaxation time approximation (RTA), multiparticle kernel decoupling approximations and the so-called kinetic theory. In the irreversible limit, none of these th...

Chemical Kinetics on Surfaces: A Singular Limit of a Reaction-Diffusion System

We show that chemical kinetics relations can be used to describe processes that involve binding and dissociation reactions that take place on surfaces. From a mathematical perspective, the problem we study is a singular limit of a reaction-diffusion system in which one of the variables concentrates on a lower-dimensional set in the limit, while the other continues to diffuse in a fixed domain.

Passing to the limit in a Wasserstein gradient flow: From diffusion to reaction

We study a singular-limit problem arising in the modelling of chemical reactions. At finite ε > 0, the system is described by a Fokker-Planck convection-diffusion equation with a double-well convection potential. This potential is scaled by 1/ε, and in the limit ε→ 0, the solution concentrates onto the two wells, resulting into a limiting system that is a pair of ordinary differential equations...
